| Black Bears and Campgrounds Black bears, New York's largest land mammals, are animals you should understand, appreciate and above all, respect. New York's population of 4,000 bears is one of the largest in the eastern United States. Being opportunists, black bears eat both plants and animals. Plant material, such as blackberries in summer and beechnuts in fall, compose the bulk of their diet. Bears also eat ants, grubs and dead animals. Bears instinctively avoid people, but are attrected by campers' food and garbage. Bears foraging for carelessly handled or unprotected food and garbage have damaged the property of many campers. On rare occasions, people have been injured by foraging black bears. You should always respect black bears as powerful and potentially dangerous wild animals. Taking care of food and garbage can help keep black bears in the forest and out of the campground. DO: - Remove all garbage from your campsite at leat once a day, especially right after each evening meal. - Clean your campsite including tables, fire places and the areas around them after every meal. Leave no scraps of food. - Clean all cooking and eating utensils. - Keep food and utensils in closed containers and put them in the trunk of your car. - Completely and securely close your car. - Collect fat drippings or food scraps in a closed container and take it to the campground refuse/recycling center. DON'T: - Leave food inside or outside of your tent. - Eat food in your tent. - Feed, bait, approach, or annoy bears. - Sleep in clothes worn while cooking. |
